One-Year Suspension for Fake Degree

An Egyptian court has sentenced former Member of Parliament Tewfigh Oukacha to one year in prison for falsifying a doctorate degree, judicial source said Thursday in Cairo. Mr. Oukacha had included this diploma in the documents submitted to the Parliament to obtain the status of MP.

He was also ordered by the court to pay a fine worth 5,000 Egyptian pounds (275 dollars) for the ruling to be suspended.

The Egyptian House of Representatives had stripped the former MP of his parliamentary status in March 2016 after dozens of his colleagues demanded so following an interview with the Israeli ambassador in Cairo.

Ali Abdelal, the president of the chamber, explained that the removal of his MP status was decided because he “raised issues related to Egyptian national security and not for meeting with the Israeli diplomat.”

The meeting of Oukacha with the ambassador of Israel aroused an outcry in the Egyptian Parliament with one MP throwing his shoes on him incriminated during a working session.
